A body discovered in Canberra's northeast is believed to be that of a man who went missing earlier this month.

Andrew Carville, a 52-year-old from Evatt, hasn't been seen since November 4.

Police fear it was him they found in Majura on Thursday, but are yet to formally identify the body.

It follows the discovery of a damaged Toyota Landcruiser in the Monlonglo Gorge on Saturday, which detectives say has "firm links" to Mr Carville.

The car was spotted by members of the public in the Majura last week.

Detective Superintendent Paul Shakeshaft could not say where the body was located or confirm reports that it was on Defence land, but only that it was in grassland.

"There are certain pieces of information we will withhold at this early stage of the investigation," he told reporters on Friday.

Det Spt Shakeshaft said it was difficult to say how long the body had been there ahead of a post-mortem this weekend.

"We have a number of lines of inquiry that we are pursuing and we'll see how those develop over the coming days," he added.
