Canberra police have pulled the body of an eight-year-old boy from the same pond where his mother and brother were discovered dead.

Yesterday, the bodies of the boy's mother and brother were found in Yerrabi Pond, on the outskirts of Canberra.

Police had been holding out hope that they would find the missing boy alive and resumed their search for him today.

The investigations into his death, and those of his mother and brother, are continuing, police said in a statement.

Police do not believe any other party was involved and a report is being prepared for the coroner.

A member of the public first called police yesterday after they saw a body in the pond.

When maritime officers from the Australian Federal Police arrived at the scene, they found the two bodies of the woman and boy.

Police and State Emergency Service volunteers were initially searching the pond and nearby parkland for a missing girl.

"It's obviously a tragic situation, it's still very early days and it's unfolding," Detective Superintendent Hall O'Meagher said yesterday.

"We're making inquiries with the family of these deceased people.

"They're assisting us with our inquiries at this time.

"Our thoughts go out to them and also to the responding police who have had to deal with this tragic circumstance."

Police also towed a family car from the scene, as they continued investigations on Saturday afternoon.

Members of the public expressed their grief following the deaths.

"When it happens to young children, there's nothing worse," one man told 9News.

"What can you say? It's a tragedy," another man said.
