UPDATE: Bishop and Putin speak on MH17, ISIL and G20 at summit

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has spoken to Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Asia-Europe economic summit in Italy.

The pair discussed MH17, the dangers posed by ISIL and the upcoming G20 summit in Brisbane, in a 25-minute meeting.

Ms Bishop earlier met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to speak about the importance of open access to the MH17 crash site.

It is Mr Putin's first appearance outside Russia since MH17 was shot down by Ukrainian rebels in June.

The Brisbane G20 next month was the focus of an address to the summit by Ms Bishop, who outlined Australia's priorities for the event.
