Bill Shorten announces Labor's new Shadow Ministry, with new roles for Tanya Plibersek and Penny Wong

Deputy Labor leader Tanya Plibersek will move from the shadow Foreign Affairs portfolio to Education under Bill Shorten's new frontbench. 

Mr Shorten announced the changes to his shadow ministry in Canberra today, three weeks after Australia went to the polls and reelected the Coalition government with the barest of majorities. 

The 32-member shadow cabinet includes eight women.

Anthony Albanese will remain as the Opposition's Infrastructure, Transport, Cities and Regional Developments spokesman, a role Mr Shorten said he had "made his own".

Chris Bowen will likewise continue as Shadow Treasurer, while Penny Wong has taken over Ms Plibersek's Foreign Affairs portfolio and will continue as Labor's leader in the Senate. 

Richard Marles has earned a promotion to Shadow Defence Minister, replacing Stephen Conroy, who will become the Shadow Special Minister of State. 

Mark Dreyfus remains Shadow Attorney General, and will take on the new role of Shadow Minister for National Security.

Ms Plibersek has also assumed the role of Labor's Minister for Women.

Jacinta Collins, Terri Butler, Doug Cameron and Andrew Leigh will all take on other education-related portfolios.

Mr Shorten described the lineup as Labor's "education dream team" said education was "one of the sharpest differences" between Labor and the Turnbull government.

Mr Shorten will personally take on the indigenous affairs portfolio, with the "father of reconciliation", Senator Pat Dodson, as his assistant spokesman.

The Labor leader described his new team as "a positive, alternative, bold government ready to govern", and more than able to take on the new Turnbull government.

"The challenge for Labor is that we've got more talented people than places to put them, which is the opposite to the government," Mr Shorten said.
