Bill Shorten meets 'future Queensland premier'

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has received a letter from an 11-year-old well-wisher, who signed off as the "future Labor Premier of Queensland".

Mr Shorten met 11-year-old Domenic Barrett at a town hall meeting in Caboolture, north of Brisbane, last night, in the potentially vulnerable Liberal seat of Longman.

The youngster gave the leader a handwritten letter expressing his political aspirations and his hopes for Labor. 

Domenic said he drew leadership inspiration from Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and one of her predecessors Peter Beattie, as well as former prime ministers Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard.

"No matter what I will be cheering for you on July 2," he wrote.

"Hopefully this will be the headline on all of the big newspapers on July 3 - 'Bill and Labor pull off stunning victory'."

Mr Shorten said he needed to have his photo taken with Domenic because one day he would achieve his dream.

"And I'll be able to say I know you," he said.

The Year 6 student from Bribie Island admitted to wagging school on occasions to go and watch Queensland parliament in action.

He had his hand up to ask a question during the town hall meeting and had wanted to ask Mr Shorten about the effect of the Brexit - Britain's departure from the European Union - on Labor's electoral chances.
