Beloved Gold Coast markets to shut down after more than four decades

The beloved Gold Coast Art and Craft Markets have been a staple for more than four decades, but come Sunday they'll be no more.

Changes in council permits are being blamed for the closure, which is leaving hundreds of stallholders in the lurch.

"Only probably about a week ago, we've just found out that the market's coming to a halt," stallholder Tracey Black said.

She runs the popular Wicked Wraps & Gourmet Snacks stall from her pink van, and the shutdown is set to deny her a vital source of income for her and many others.

"It's a massive blow," she said.

"It's like 70 per cent of my business, and there's 200 other stallholders that have only just found out also.

"This is people's livelihoods, and it's going to cause a lot of devastation for a lot of people if it doesn't carry on."

Managing director Damon Robbins didn't renew the markets' permit, claiming council couldn't reinstate the Burleigh site, due to ongoing construction works.

The Broadbeach site would also have to change locations, and stalls would be reduced at Coolangatta.

"When we ran the numbers, we were going to be looking at an income that would have been less than when we were in the COVID period," Robbins said.

Gold Coast City Council issued a statement about the closure, saying that, "With no applications received, the council is happy to work with stallholders and the leaseholder to explore opportunities".
