NSW Premier Mike Baird says his new cabinet will be a mix of experience with an injection of youth.

The only certain change at this point is that Mr Baird will become minister for western Sydney while dropping the state treasury portfolio.

Mr Baird became premier last week following Barry O'Farrell's resignation over evidence he gave to the corruption watchdog, and is due to unveil his full cabinet in coming days.

He confirmed on Monday he wants to be minister for western Sydney, previously held by Mr O'Farrell, because it's an important region.

"We expect to announce the cabinet shortly," he told reporters.

"We're in discussions at the moment about putting that together.

"I can assure you this: there will be a team that can make this state very proud, there will be a mix of experience and an injection of youth."

Mr Baird would not speculate on who would become treasurer.
