Bail extended for NT policeman over crash

A police officer charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice after leaving the scene of a car crash in which five boys were injured has had his bail extended.

Senior Constable Chinthaka Hettiarachchi, 40, appeared at the Alice Springs Magistrates Court on Thursday.

It is alleged that on May 9, Hettiarachchi and junior constable Erin Dana Hicks, 20, were following a stolen car being driven by a 12-year-old boy at 2am on a dirt road near Charles Creek when the boy lost control of the car, rolling and hitting a tree.

He suffered a broken foot and his passengers, aged 10, 11, 13 and 15, suffered a variety of injuries including a broken collarbone.

Police told AAP lights and sirens were not used and that it was not a pursuit, but detectives from the Major Crime and Professional Standards Command alleged Hettiarachchi committed serious breaches of discipline and criminal offences.

They charged him with hit and run causing serious harm, failure to rescue and provide help, not stopping or assisting after a crash, and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Magistrate David Bamber agreed to extend bail until Hettiarachchi appears before the court again on July 30, on the condition that he not contact Hicks, who is being heard separately for making a false statutory declaration in relation to the crash.
