An autopsy has failed to establish how a 13-month-old boy died at a Far North Queensland home.

The boy was found unresponsive at a house in Cairns on Monday morning.

He was rushed to Cairns Base Hospital but was declared dead on arrival despite paramedics' attempts to revive him.

Police were hoping autopsy results would shed light on how the boy died.

However a spokeswoman said initial results were "inconclusive".

Further forensic tests have been ordered.

Several residents of the home, as well as neighbours and other relatives have also been interviewed.

Police have not confirmed reports that the boy was in the bath shortly before he lost consciousness.
