The final day of summer today will be a scorcher for Sydney, with temperatures in some suburbs to nudge 40 degrees, while the mercury will reach 35 degrees in the city centre.

The heat has been tracking across southern Australia from the west for several days, stoking bushfires in Victoria and South Australia, but will finally reach the east coast today, reports Weatherzone.

Penrith and Parramatta in Sydney's west can expect top temperatures of 39 degrees 38 degrees respectively.

Only the city's coastal suburbs will be spared the worst of the heat, with Bondi in the eastern suburbs heading for 32 degrees.

Large parts of New South Wales are also forecast to have a sweltering day as summer bows out.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe heatwave warning for the Mid North Coast, Hunter, Northern Tablelands, South Coast, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, Snowy Mountains, Central West Slopes & Plains, South West Slopes and Upper Western Districts.

In several regional cities and towns, including Cessnock, Dubbo and Parkes, the mercury will reach 40 degrees or more.

Canberra is also in for a reasonably hot and humid day with a top temperature of 34 degrees expected.

Residents can expect relief from the heat later today when a cool change arrives by the afternoon, with the chance of thunderstorms.
