The National Heart Foundation is reviewing its dietary advice on fish oil supplements after a new Australian study found they do not prevent heart disease.

Researchers at Melbourne's Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute, the University of South Australia, and the CSIRO reviewed data from 2007 to 2013 and found no clear benefit to heart health for patients taking Omega-3 supplements.

The study found that eating particular types of fish and plants high in Omega-3 resulted in improved cardiovascular health.

But it isn't time to throw the fish oil tablets in the bin, as scientists found the supplements were helpful in treating a range of other ailments.

Viewers in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth can find out more details of the study tonight in 9NEWS at 6pm on Channel 9. Interstate viewers can stream 9NEWS Melbourne online at 6pm.
