Australian special forces set for increased role in Iraq in battle against ISIL

Australian special forces are set to take on an increased role in the fight against ISIL in Iraq.

Under a new deal between Prime Minister Tony Abbott and his Iraqi counterpart Haider al-Abadi, Australian troops could take part in military exercises alongside local forces, The Australian has reported.

Commandos could also be sent closer to the frontline to better assist Iraqi forces in the fighting amid concerns of a damaging lack of action by Dr Abadi’s government.

The deal follows Mr Abbott’s visit to Baghdad last week, where he and Dr Abadi reportedly discussed ways to make the Australian-Iraqi coalition more effective.

The Prime Minister has not ruled out sending more troops to the strife-torn region.

Australia has 200 special forces troops in the country, with their main role in training and advising Iraqi soldiers.

UAE-based RAAF Super Hornet jets have also been involved in 1500 or so airstrikes against ISIL.
