Thousands of extra public transport routes announced to shuttle tennis fans to and from the Australian Open
Thousands of extra public transport services will shuttle Australian Open fans to tennis matches in Melbourne during the mammoth two-week sporting event.
The state government today announced another 4500 services on Melbourne's famous tram network to help ferry ticketholders to the courts in Melbourne Park from January 12.
Trams will run every two to three minutes during the busiest periods of the tournament and will be free for ticketholders and staff.

Along with extra trams on the Route 70a service, night buses will also run from Federal Square after play ends until 2am.
During last year's Australian Open, trams were used almost 500,000 times by tennis fans.
This amounts to nearly half the record 1,020,763 people who attended the tournament in 2024.
There are other ways to reach Melbourne Park during the busy tennis season.
Fans can catch the route 246 bus between Elsternwick and Clifton Hill, which stops at Olympic Boulevard on Punt Rad.

They can also get off at Richmond Station, which is a short walk from the Grand Slam Entrance.
Ticketholders getting off at Flinders Street Station can connect to Melbourne Park via a tram or a walk over Tanderrum Bridge through Birrarung Marr.
Jolimont Station is also accessible via foot from the courts.
"The Australian Open is one of the largest sporting events in the world – and our world's largest tram network will help people get there," Victoria's acting transport minister Colin Brooks said.

The main event of the Australian Open will be held between January 12-26 at Melbourne Park, which has been home to the grand slam tournament since 1988.
