Australia set for chilly start to winter as eastern states shiver

Winter is just one day away and the temperatures have already started to plummet as the first cold front of the season stretches across Australia’s south-east. 

While areas in Queensland’s north will have a cool start to winter, Brisbane is forecast to have its coldest start to the season in 12 years based on minimum temperatures.

The mercury is expected to drop as low at nine degrees by tomorrow, however milder temperatures of up to 22 degrees could be seen throughout the middle of the day.

Weatherzone meteorologist Ben Domensino said a combination of the cold front and dry weather will see the mornings and nights across the city start to become colder.

“These conditions will allow clear skies, light winds and a cool air mass to combine and bring a string of chilly mornings during the opening days of winter,” he said.

“Brisbane is forecast to reach lows of eight to nine degrees during the first four mornings of June, which hasn't happened since 2006.

“While the opening nights of winter will be nippy, days will be sunny and pleasant.”

As for New South Wales, wintry weather conditions are expected to be a little harsher from tomorrow with temperatures dropping as low as minus two degrees in parts of the state’s Central West.

Parts of the NSW coast and Sydney can expect slightly warmer conditions than that, with minimum conditions of around 11 degrees.

Weatherzone has also predicted that maximum temperatures across the state could rise as high as 20 degrees in parts, however cloud cover, wind and rain may rule that out by tomorrow.

On the back of the cold front which is slowly moving north-east, Victoria and Tasmania will remain chilly for the start to winter with forecasted temperatures between zero and eight degrees at their lowest.

Unlike the rest of the country, the areas of Australia not affected by the cold front stretching across the south-east will still see a slightly cool start to winter, but ultimately warmer than other states.

South Australians should expect strong winds across the state with maximum temperatures of between 18 and 21 degrees throughout the day tomorrow.

For Western Australia, despite some showers and storms that could pass over Perth and the state’s south-east, temperatures should remain warm.

Perth itself should see a 19-degree day, while locations in northern WA such as Broome and Port Hedland will see temperatures jump as high as 31 degrees.

Those conditions will also be replicated in the Northern Territory as the warmer conditions stretch across the state throughout the day and temperatures will drop to just 21 degrees in Darwin.
