South Australia to swelter in temperatures nudging 50 degrees

Parts of South Australia are expected to reach temperatures of more than 40 degrees today as a heatwave smothers the state.

The mercury in central Adelaide will climb to 41 degrees, while northern suburbs will get even hotter at 42 degrees, and some regional areas, such as Oak Valley, will swelter in temperatures of 47 degrees.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued severe heatwave conditions over northern and central parts of the state, reaching up to extreme heatwave conditions over the Northwest Pastoral district.

People at risk from severe heat, including the elderly, babies, children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, people with medical conditions or who are unwell are being urged to take care.

They should seek a place to keep cool, such as their home, a library, community centre or shopping centre.

And if available, use fans or air-conditioners to keep cool.

Family members and friends should check on their well-being throughout the day.

Residents should also close windows and draw blinds, curtains or awnings early in the day to keep the heat out of their home.

Relief from the scorching conditions is expected from tomorrow, with temperatures forecast to drop by 10 degrees or more in many parts of SA.

Rain is forecast for later in the week.
