For millions of Australians who've been rugged up amid chilly weather for much of this month, a welcome burst of warmer conditions is on the way.

Temperatures will reach 5 to 7 degrees above the seasonal average in some capital cities over the coming days as a warm air mass moves across southeastern states.

This balmy weather is being caused by warm west to northwesterly winds ahead of a cold front that will sweep across the southeast from today.

South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales and the ACT will bask in warm wintry conditions over the coming days, before temperatures drop behind a cold front that will arrive late today into Thursday.

The peak daytime temperatures in capital cities this week are: Sydney will be 6 to 7 degrees above average tomorrow, reaching up to 24 degrees in the afternoon; Adelaide will be about 5 degrees above average today, with a maximum of 20 degrees; Brisbane is forecast to record 25 degrees days on Friday and Saturday, nearly 3 degrees above average; Hobart should reach 17 degrees today, 4 degrees above the July average; and Melbourne will be mostly sunny and reach a top temperature of 16 degrees today, 2 degrees above average.

While the days are warm, the nighttime temperatures across eastern Australia have been cold.

The cloud-free nights in the region mean that much of the day's warmth radiates away from earth overnight.

But minimum temperatures will rise today and Thursday night with some cloud acting as a blanket.

Sydney's minimum is forecast to be 5 degrees above average.

Meanwhile, overnight temperatures in southern Australia should continue to be much warmer than average for the next few days.

Looking ahead, a cold southerly air mass will drop temperatures across the southeast late this week into early next for several days, so enjoy this warmth.
