Line of storms stretching 500km lurking over Western Australia's interior

More rain is forecast for the south-western Western Australia this week after 32,000 lightning strikes hit the Kalgoorlie region.

Satellite images showed a 500km line of thunderstorms lurking between Leinster and Salmon Gums yesterday.

While the storm produced little rain, lightning activity was a different story, with Weatherzone recording 32,000 strikes in just a day over the Kalgoorlie region.

This rain and storm event is being caused by a low-pressure trough on the surface and an upper-level low-pressure system.

Forecasters say this low will weaken today and continue moving east, passing into South Australia by mid-week, with the rainfall and thunderstorms easing in WA.

Looking ahead, another burst of wet weather is forecast for south-western WA from Friday and into the weekend as a surface low-pressure system sweeps across the state.

But it's too early to say how much rain will fall.

Meanwhile, the grey skies and frequent showers in New South Wales are forecast to linger for the remainder of the week.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast high chances of rain through to Sunday, with daily falls of up to 35mm expected on some days.

The bureau says showers were expected to continue over the next six days as an easterly flow continued to move onto the coastline from a high-pressure system sitting over Tasmania.

But NSW was not expected to see further high totals such as those experienced over the weekend.
