Australia Post warns of 'porch pirates' stealing Christmas parcels

Aussies are being warned to outsmart 'porch pirates' by using parcel lockers and taking other measures to make sure they get their deliveries.

Rather than getting packages delivered to their home where they're easy for thieves to steal, using parcel lockers which are often at a post office is an easy option.

They can then be collected anytime, and the post office does not need to be open.

Experts are also pleading with Aussies to download the AusPost app so they can track deliveries.

This also allows redirection requests such as leaving the parcel at the local post office or in a safe place.

"If a parcel is stolen after it has been delivered it becomes a matter for police, however we're encouraging customers to consider our secure delivery options to reduce the risk of this happening." Australia Post General Manager Group Security, Kevin Zuccato said.

"We know customers are eagerly anticipating the arrival of their parcels, especially ahead of Christmas, so please remain vigilant. Anyone who suspects their mail has been stolen should contact their local police or CrimeStoppers."

Chief Executive of CrimeStoppers Victoria, Stella Smith, said thieves strike quickly, with a rise in thefts around Christmas.

"Simple steps like choosing secure delivery options and reporting any suspicious behaviour can make a real difference. If you have footage of suspicious activity or information about a theft, share it with CrimeStoppers to help prevent further incidents."

Australia Post has brought back Saturday deliveries for Christmas.

They were previously cut, with posties only delivering Monday to Friday.

To avoid disappointment, shoppers are being told to stick to these cut-off dates to guarantee arrival by Christmas Day.

People sending to or from Western Australia, Northern Territory, Tasmania, or regional and remote locations, should allow a few extra days.
