Australia Post is introducing a new feature to its app which allows customers to see photos of attempted deliveries.

Images will be shared in the MyPost app from May 19 to keep customers up to date.

To receive the photo, Australia Post will need to be able to match the parcel to the customer's MyPost account via their email address or mobile phone number.

Australia Post said the rest of the process for parcel delivery would remain the same.

"Posties and drivers are still required to knock three times," Australia Post told customers in an email.

"As usual, our attempted delivery notifications will advise that your delivery couldn't be completed, followed by an update when your parcel is ready for collection.

"When we attempt to deliver a parcel, our delivery team member may take a photo of the front door of your property where delivery is attempted.

"We may also capture a photo if we identify a hazard which our delivery team needs to be aware of for future deliveries."

A strict process is in place for Australia Post delivery team members when taking the images to protect privacy.

Delivery drivers must only photograph outside of the front door or the location where the parcel is left in a safe place.

They must not photograph any people, vehicles, identifying text or inside of a property through the windows.

Delivery drivers also must not capture personal circumstances where these might be visible from the front door.

Photographers will be available for 90 days then archived and deleted after three years.

"To deliver parcels to you, our team needs reasonable, safe access to your property," Australia Post said.

"We infer your permission to access and deliver, or attempt to deliver, and to take photos.

"We are taking steps, including sending this communication and making changes to the Australia Post Terms and Conditions, to keep you informed of these processes.
