Police divers join search for woman missing in floodwaters in Hunter Valley

Police divers have joined a multi-agency search for a woman who was swept away in floodwaters in the Hunter Valley over the weekend.

The 26-year-old woman went missing on Saturday after the car she was a passenger in was caught in floodwaters outside of Cessnock in New South Wales.

The Mini Countryman attempted to drive through floodwater at Black Creek in Rothbury, but then became stuck.

A 27-year-old woman who was the driver of the vehicle was rescued, her passenger was washed away.

The police divers will join specialist officers from the Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit and Marine Area Command as the search for the missing woman extends into another day.

Members of the SES and the Rural Fire Service are also involved in the search.

The SES has received more than 4,300 calls and responded to 2,345 incidents, including 34 flood rescues since flooding began late last week.

In the Hunter, flooding is easing at Singleton and warnings have been de-escalated, although an Emergency Warning for parts of Raymond Terrace remains in place with floodwaters expected to peak today.

There are still more than 40 warnings current for residents across the Mid North Coast, Upper Hunter and New England regions, which have been pounded by rain over the weekend.

The SES has urged people to never drive through floodwater, and has asked for people with knowledge of the missing woman to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
