Have your say in naming Australia's new lunar rover

Australians can have their say on the name of Australia's new lunar rover, after a shortlist of four options was finalised.

The Australian Space Agency, in partnership with NASA, is working with the local space industry to design and build an Australian-made rover.

It will head to the moon as part of a future Artemis mission, potentially as early as 2026.

It will collect lunar soil, from which NASA scientists will try to extract oxygen, a key step towards a sustainable human presence on the moon.

More than 8200 names for the rover were put forward by schools and individuals around the country.

Now, the final four have been revealed.

Coolamon (Anil, Victoria)

Referencing Australia's Indigenous heritage and connection to the land, a coolamon is a multi-purpose, sustainable tool used for gathering and carrying.

It symbolises the balance between utility and respect for the environment.

Kakirra (Hamilton Secondary College, South Australia)

Translated from the Indigenous Kaurna language, Kakirra means "Moon".

Mateship (Joseph, Victoria)

The proposal for this name underlines "mateship" as "a crucial part of Australian culture" shared by people in all parts of the country.

Roo-ver (Siwa, NSW)

A clear reference to our national animal emblem as Australia leaps forward in science.

You can vote online here. Entries will close at 11.59pm AEDT on Friday, December 1.

The winning name will be announced on December 6 at the 16th Australian Space Forum in Sydney.
