Australia's luckiest postcode is a little suburb just an hour's drive out of Melbourne where residents have managed to scoop more than $10 million in one year alone.

The suburb of Melton, bearing the postcode 3337, has been named the luckiest in Australia after four division one winning lottery entries were sold there in 2020.

That totalled a staggering $10.4 million in combined winnings for Melton locals, who topped the nation for the most division one wins in the past 12 months.

An analysis of lottery data from official holder The Lott has revealed the luckiest postcodes in each state of Australia.

After Melton, the second luckiest postcode was 6062 of Morley in Western Australia, which won $6.45 million.

It was followed by 4870 (Cairns, Queensland) with $6.24 million and then the Sydney CBD postcode of 2000 where $5.4 million was won in 2020.

When broken down by state, Victorians won an astounding $365.4 million followed by NSW and the ACT ($420 million), Queensland ($300 million), Western Australia ($68.5 million) and South Australia ($53 million).

Bronwyn Spencer from The Lott said it was not unusual to see pockets of winners come from the same area.

"While lottery wins can land anywhere, from time to time, we see pockets of wins in the same region or postcode emerge," Ms Spencer said.

"This year we've seen a mix of hotspots, from bustling city centres to regional areas and smaller towns, proving that a winning hotspot can emerge anywhere across the country."

However just because Melton is on a hot streak for division one winners, does not mean it will fire again.

"Some players flock to hotspots for their entries in the hopes it scores them a major prize, while others avoid them in the hope lottery lightning will strike elsewhere," Ms Spencer said.

"Regardless, there is one thing that is guaranteed – you can't win if you don't have an entry."
