An Australian woman has reportedly appeared in court in the Bahamas accused of murdering her husband in their luxury home.

Former Sydney podiatrist Phillip Vasyli, 59, was found dead in the tiny Caribbean nation's wealthy Old Fort Bay community, on New Providence Island, on March 24.

He'd been repeatedly stabbed in the chest.

Authorities have detained Mr Vasyli's wife, Donna, and charged her with his murder, Bahamian newspaper The Tribune reports.

She appeared in court on Monday.

The 54-year-old is said to have hired the legal services of high profile local lawyers Elliot Lockhart QC and Murrio Ducille.

The paper's website includes video footage showing a handcuffed Donna Vasyli apparently arriving at court flanked by security personnel.

Mr Vasyli established three podiatry clinics in Sydney and later founded an orthotic footwear company that sells Vionic with Orthaheel Technology products in the US, the UK and elsewhere.

He set up his first practice in western Sydney and had lived in the Bahamas with his wife and two children for at least 15 years.

Mr Vasyli is also said to have run a non-profit organisation with his wife, son and daughter to help improve the health of those living in poor communities.
