Aust takes sugar tariff case against India

Australia has formally launched a dispute in the World Trade Organisation against India's continuing sugar subsidies, which are threatening the nation's $1.8 billion sugar export industry.
The action, first flagged in November and now joined by Brazil, is needed because India's subsidy regime goes against WTO rules and has created a global sugar glut, Trade Minister Simon Birmingham said on Thursday.
He said Australia had repeatedly sought to resolve the issue directly with India and through other WTO processes to no avail, leaving the government no choice but to take action to protect Australian farmers' export prospects.
