Assistance for north Qld after cyclones

Extra disaster assistance has been offered to north Queensland councils mopping up after two cyclones tore through the region.

Following Cyclone Dylan, which made landfall last Friday between Bowen and Airlie Beach, assistance was offered to local government areas of Burdekin, Townsville and Whitsunday.

The jointly-funded commonwealth and state disaster relief arrangements have now been extended to Hinchinbrook, Isaac, Livingstone and Mackay councils.

Gusts up to 135km/h, heavy rain and storm surges battered coastal areas from Townsville to Rockhampton as the category two cyclone crossed the coast and tracked inland.

Low-lying areas were inundated during king tides and storm surges swept away parts of an island resort.

Funds have also been offered to councils in Burke, Carpentaria, Doomadgee and Mornington which were impacted by Cyclone Fletcher.

The category one cyclone made landfall between Karumba and the Gilbert River Mouth in the Gulf of Carpentaria on Monday night, but it was a fizzer.

Disaster assistance funds will used to restore public areas damaged during the cyclones and to recuperate costs incurred by the councils responding to the storms.

A spokeswoman for Queensland Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services Jack Dempsey told AAP the total cost of the damage was not yet known.
