Anzac Day in 2024 marks 109 years to the day when Australian and New Zealand troops landed at Anzac Cove at the start of their ultimately unsuccessful invasion of the Gallipoli peninsula.

The village of Villers-Bretonneux is particularly remembered by Anzacs for the sacrifice of Australian soldiers who repelled a German occupation of the town in 1918.

Two Australian brigades were given the task of retaking Villers-Bretonneux through a swift night-time counterattack.

After fierce fighting on the morning of 25 April, three years to the day after the Anzacs landings at Gallipoli, French and Australian flags were raised over Villers-Bretonneux.

A dawn service was also held at Anzac cove beach on the Gallipoli peninsula, Turkey.

The service is held yearly at the birthplace of the Anzac legend, where Australian and New Zealand soldiers fought on the beaches and hills of Turkey in 1915.
