Alec Baldwin makes ‘Donald Trump’ comeback in Phoenix rally SNL sketch

Alec Baldwin has reprised in his role as Donald Trump for the latest episode of Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update, identifying the US president as the true martyr of the tragic Charlottesville rally.

US actor Baldwin kicked off the sketch mocking Mr Trump's most recent rally in Phoenix, Arizona by referencing a viral photo of the man attempting to look at the North American solar eclipse without the aid of special glasses.

He then goes on to introduce himself as the “tragic victim” of the Charlottesville rally, accusing the media of unfairly “reporting my entire remarks, even the bad ones”.

Baldwin attempts to set the record straight by reading his comments directly from a transcript, only to accidentally read a transcript of last year’s infamous leaked Access Hollywood video.

“I moved on her like a bitch. But I couldn’t get there-” he begins, before realising his error.

Baldwin boasts of having “solved Afghanistan” and closes by thanking for White House chief strategist Steve Bannon, who appears on the stage in the form of the Grim Reaper, threatening to “crush” Mr Trump.

It comes just a week after Mr Bannon left his role to reassume control of right-wing website Breitbart, in what the former Goldman Sachs investment banker has called a “voluntary” choice.

“The Trump presidency that we fought for, and won, is over," Mr Bannon subsequently told The Weekly Standard.

"We still have a huge movement, and we will make something of this Trump presidency. But that presidency is over.

“It’ll be something else. And there’ll be all kinds of fights, and there’ll be good days and bad days, but that presidency is over."
