Aldi has been named Australia's best in Canstar Blue's 2020 supermarket ratings for the eighth time in 10 years.

The German-owned discount grocer was awarded five stars in deals and specials, product freshness, quality of private label products, store layout and value for money.

It beat more premium rivals in Coles and Woolworths, who both featured in the top five.

The annual rating by the consumer review site ranks the nation's supermarkets based off a number of categories including price, freshness and value for money.

The supermarket that scores highest takes home the "Most Satisfied Customers" award.

In second place was South Australian chain Foodland, which was awarded with four stars thanks to strong representation in the value for money and deals categories.

Woolworths was ranked third, followed by Coles and finally IGA in fifth place.

The ranking is complied by reviews given to Canstar Blue from more than 2600 shoppers, and surveys their buying experiences from a single month of groceries.

Tahnee-Jae Lopez-Vito, who compiled the report, said the strong response to Aldi's private label products and bi-weekly "special buys" helped it compete against more prominent chains.

"German grocery giant ALDI has again claimed top spot in these supermarket ratings," Ms Lopez-Vito wrote.

"While ALDI doesn't have the same number of stores as Coles and Woolworths, it's fighting back against the duopoly with often lower prices, with its own brands offering real competition against the major brands stocked by other supermarkets."

The last time Aldi did not take out the top spot was in 2017, when Foodland was rated as the most satisfying customer experience.

Aldi's Group Director Simon Padovani-Ginies said the supermarket was proud of its enduring success in the award.

"We are thrilled to be rated as Australia's best Supermarket! Winning the hearts of our customers is what we strive for every day," Mr Padovani-Ginies said.

"Our commitment to providing the highest quality products at incredibly low prices is clearly being noticed by Australian shoppers.
