Albo says he doesn't need Shorten's help

Senior Labor figure Anthony Albanese insists he doesn't need the help of his leader when it comes to campaigning in his electorate.

Mr Albanese on Wednesday dismissed reports Opposition Leader Bill Shorten was avoiding key Victorian seats where he might be confronted over the CFA dispute.

He backed up his argument by insisting there were many electorates Mr Shorten had not visited, including his own inner Sydney seat of Grayndler, which is being targeted by the Greens.

"Why would he? I'm doing pretty well out there by myself," Mr Albanese told ABC radio.

He said the leader was needed in marginal seats and seats where members and candidates needed profile building.

"I've got a profile," he said.

The comments come amid renewed speculation about whether Mr Albanese will challenge Mr Shorten for the Labor leadership.

Mr Albanese laughed off the suggestion on Wednesday but stopped short of ruling it out.

"I want to be a minister in Bill Shorten's government in the next term. Full stop. Exclamation mark," he said.
