For the first time ever, a Lockheed Lightning fighter aircraft has fired its gun while airborne.
A test aircraft fired a series of bursts from the 25mm Gatling gun during trial flights over the US at the end of last month.
The RAAF plans to acquire up to 100 of these advanced stealth aircraft with the first set to enter service in 2021.
