AFL star Paddy Ryder makes citizen's arrest after home invasion

AFL ruckman Paddy Ryder has made a dramatic citizen’s arrest after an attempted early morning home invasion at his Adelaide house.

The Port Adelaide star pursued three offenders who attempted to break into his western suburbs home at around 4.15am today.

Ryder and another man staying at his family home gave chase as the intruders fled in a car stolen earlier in the morning form a nearby suburb.

The car crashed at an intersection in adjoining West Lakes, with the 196-centimetre tall footballer nabbing one of the occupants while the other pair escaped.

It’s understood Ryder returned the man to his house and handed him to police who had arrived in the meantime to investigate the incident.

Police believe that earlier the same offenders had broken into an Osborne house while a family was sleeping inside, stealing jewellery, cash and the car they later crashed.

A 19 year-old man has been charged with aggravated serious criminal trespass, illegal use of a motor vehicle, theft and attempted criminal trespass.

The search continues for two other men.

The Port Adelaide Football Club has issued a statement saying it is relieved no-one was hurt in what was a “traumatic experience for Patrick and his family”.

Ryder joined his teammates for training just hours after the ordeal, seemingly unaffected. He is named to play in the Power’s first match of the 2018 AFL Season at Adelaide Oval on Saturday afternoon.
