A man has been arrested after allegedly going for a joy ride on an Adelaide race track early this morning.

South Australia Police say the man drove his ute through a gate and onto the VALIO Adelaide 500 track at 4.30am today.

The man allegedly parked his ute against a barrier on the track and fell asleep.

Security guards arrived and called police, who arrested the 44-year-old man from Athol Park.

He was charged with entering a restricted area at a major event venue.

He was granted bail and will appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on January 17.

The track and his ute were not damaged.

The Supercars Championship Series was held at the track in the Adelaide Parklands yesterday.
