Adelaide man accused of sexually assaulting sleeping woman in spa

An Adelaide taxi driver accused of sexually assaulting a young woman at a popular public pool remains behind bars.

The 60-year-old man appeared in court this afternoon accused of sexually assaulting the 27-year-old while she was asleep in a spa.

The accused fronted the Adelaide Magistrates Court where he was refused bail.

Prosecutors strongly opposed bail due to the opportunistic and brazen nature of the crime.

Their case includes CCTV footage from inside the aquatic centre and above the public spa.

The court heard the accused plans to contest the charges.

Police were called to the city's aquatic centre just before 5.30pm yesterday when a woman reported she had been assaulted.

It's alleged the victim fell asleep while she was in the public spa with other people around, and woke to find the accused man sexually assaulting her.

Following an investigation by detectives, the man from Adelaide's north-eastern suburbs was arrested and charged with sexual assault.

The court ordered a home detention report to be prepared.

The accused will reappear before the court next week.

The incident has shocked swimmers who regularly use the pool that is run by the Adelaide City Council.

"The City of Adelaide is committed to providing a safe environment for all activities at our aquatic centre," a statement from a council spokesperson said.

"We are continuing to work closely with SA Police and its investigation into this incident."
