Police save disabled woman from burning Adelaide unit

Brave police officers have smashed their way into a western Adelaide unit during the rescue of a disabled woman and her carer from a fire.

The blaze is being treated as suspicious.

The alarm was raised shortly before 8am today and a police patrol was the first to arrive on scene.

Police say a male and a female officer smashed their way in through a window and helped a man out.

One or both of the officers then stayed inside the unit with the disabled woman until fire crews were able to help rescue her.

Both occupants have since been taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, while the police officers also required treatment.

One neighbour told 9News the man had tried in vain to free himself and the woman as smoke "poured out" of their unit.

"He was just in a panic because he couldn't get his partner out... she was trapped," the neighbour said.

"The window was too small... he looked disoriented. There was heaps of smoke in there.

"They had got from the bedroom to a bathroom, but couldn't get out.

"I'm glad they're safe – you don't want anyone caught in a fire."
