Adelaide early childhood centre forced to close after alleged breaches in safety and supervision

Parents have been forced to find new childcare arrangements in less than 12 hours after a centre in Adelaidesouth-west was closed for two weeks.

The closure comes as authorities investigate alleged breaches in safety and supervision after reports a child was left unattended.

Edge Early Learning childhood centre in Plympton is responsible for over 100 children, but has been visited on multiple occasions by the Education Standards Board.

This latest action was taken after claims it was improperly supervising children in its care.

The centre told parents it related to two children being left unsupervised for 2 minutes while a student teacher left to seek guidance.

According to the board, it wasn't the first breach at the Plympton facility - and not the first time an Edge Early Learning centre has failed its expectations.

Violations have been found at Munno Para West and Royal Park, and all 24 centres in South Australia have been put on notice to improve a range of issues in the next 12 months.

Education, Training and Skills Minister Blair Boyer said he did not regret the inconvenience it would cause parents, saying safety is paramount.

"I think it obviously sends a message to Edge Early Learning, but this will send a message right through the long daycare sector, right around the nation," he said.

"Despite the fact this is undoubtedly a real inconvenience for the 60 families who use that centre, I won't put convenience ahead of child safety."

There is no guarantee the centre in Plympton will reopen after the two-week period is up, and further action could be taken if there are no signs of improvement.
