Adelaide Council back-flips on Christmas carols ban after public backlash

Mitcham council has back-flipped on a decision to scrap its annual Christmas Carols event, following public outcry.

It comes a week after councillors voted to ditch the long-running Carols by the Creek event, with some members believing it was too religious and not inclusive.

That decision sparked outcry from the community and prompted a special meeting to be held last night.

More than 150 people attended with the vocal crowd erupting when the decision was reversed.

Councillor Adriana Christopoulos was among those who urged the council to reconsider.

"Don't allow the push for political correctness for some in this chamber who used diversity to take away from the real things that this community wants and from what we should be doing as a council," Ms Christopoulos said.

Carols by the Creek has been running for 25 years.

A report into options for the future of the event beyond this year will now be prepared.
