Adelaide bus driver stabbed with scissors in late-night attack

An Adelaide bus driver has been stabbed with scissors by a passenger, prompting a major security rethink on the city's public transport network.

The 37-year-old driver was stabbed in the hand in North Adelaide on the 228 bus to Smithfield, just before 11.30 last night.

A short time later, police arrested a 23-year-old woman from Morphett Vale on North Terrace, with scissors in her possession.

The Transport Workers Union said attacks on drivers happen far too often, also citing instances of spitting and verbal abuse. 

The state government says it has accelerated the installation of security screens around bus drivers in all 940 public buses.

But the work won't be finished for another two years, so it will now look to move those that already have screens onto high-risk routes.

Transport Minister Tom Koutsantonis said all public transport vehicles are equipped with CCTV cameras, dispelling any notion that offenders can evade accountability.

"The idea that anyone thinks they can get on a bus, train or tram, commit an offence and get away with it, is kidding themselves," he said. 

The bus driver's hand is expected to fully recover.
