A man is fighting for life after he was allegedly bashed in Adelaide's party strip.

Paramedics arrived to find the 20-year-old unconscious Hindley Street early this morning and rushed him to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

Witnesses said the violence erupted after a dispute over a woman just before 5.30am today.

The alleged victim, who was reportedly out for a night with his girlfriend, was left with a broken temple, crushed ribs and a brain bleed.

Witnesses said a group fleeing down Cosmopolitan Arcade after the incident and police later arrested a 23-year-old Clearview man nearby.

The alleged attacker has been charged with assault causing serious harm.

The victim remains in hospital in a critical condition.
