Adelaide Archbishop Philip Wilson facing revolt from within Catholic church

Disgraced Adelaide Archbishop Philip Wilson is facing a revolt from within his own church, with several of his Catholic colleagues joining calls for him to resign for concealing child sex abuse.

A statement released by the Catholic Church two days after Wilson, 67, was sentenced to 12 months in custody for the offence, indicated bishops around the nation are losing patience with the archbishop and his refusal to quit.

"A number of survivors, prominent Australians and other members of the community have publicly called on Archbishop Wilson to resign," the statement said.

"Although we have no authority to compel him to do so, a number of Australian bishops have also offered their advice privately."

At this stage, it appears the archbishop has not taken that advice.

9NEWS sought a response from his office, but was referred to a statement he released yesterday, which said he will only resign if he loses an appeal against his conviction.

Wilson has temporarily stood aside from the role, with Vicar General Philip Marshall taking control of his duties during the court case.

The only person who can make that arrangement permanent – and sack Wilson - is the Pope.
