Serial protester arrested for sixth time says action 'necessary'

A serial protester who has emerged as the face of the Extinction Rebellion protests disrupting and shutting down Brisbane CBD says what he and his cohorts are achieving is "necessary and significant".

Protests from the group continued in Brisbane today, where 72 were arrested on various charges.

Organisers say they had been planning the protest day for months, with participants coming from as far away as Melbourne.

Eric Herbert has been arrested five times for his protests, and was last month sentenced to 50 hours community service in connection to one of those arrests.

He told A Current Affair's Chris Allen that he wasn't planning to get arrested again today.

"But there are heaps of people here that are," he said.

Allen asked him why he thought holding Brisbane to ransom was the best way to achieve the group's goals.

"It's actually the people of Brisbane who are participating in this," Herbert said.

"Not a whole lot, as far as I can see?" Allen responded.

"Well, that's right," Herbert said.

Court documents list Herbert's address as his parents' five-bedroom canal-front home on the Sunshine Coast, complete with an infinity pool.

But Herbert claims he's been couch-surfing since he quit uni to protest in April.

And members of his family are in full support.

One of three triplets, his two sisters are globe-trotting models with 1.4 million followers on Instagram.

They were on hand at the Brisbane protests to support "him and his whole movement".

His father was also in the crowd, saying Herbert's heart was in the right place.

Before the day was out, Herbert was arrested again for a sixth time.

Herbert's fines already total more than $2000, but his father said he wouldn't be paying them for him.

"Crowd source for that one," he said.
