Drug haul worth $64m found in container marked as carrying spring rolls

An investigation is under way after Australian Border Force (ABF) officers seized more than 900kg of amphetamines from a container arriving at Port Botany.

ABF officers used existing intelligence profiles and targeted a container arriving from overseas in one of the largest seizures of the drug in NSW history.

The total value of the amphetamines, also known as "speed", had an estimated street value of more than $64 million.

The container, declared as "vegetable spring roll and more", held 600 rolls of plastic film, estimated to contain 1.5kg of amphetamines each.

The matter has been handed to the Australian Federal Police, which conducted search warrants at a North Shore home and a warehouse in Western Sydney.

Further investigations found that the drugs were added to a legitimate importation without the business's knowledge.

Police deemed it to be the result of a transnational organised crime group attempting to import the drugs by piggybacking on the shipment of a legitimate Australian business.

AFP Detective Superintendent Morgen Blunden said investigators identified multiple incidents of illicit drugs being concealed under the guise of imports by a range of legitimate companies. 

"The AFP is attending Port Botany on a regular basis and has seized multiple shipments containing a range of drugs," Blunden said.
