Abbott's polling woes set to hurt NSW Liberals in next month's election

Seven weeks out from the NSW election, Premier Mike Baird is set to hold onto power - but Prime Minister Tony Abbott's growing unpopularity is set to hurt his comfortable lead.

Fairfax Media's latest poll has the NSW coalition up by two points since November on a two-party preferred basis, leading Labor 56 percent to 44 percent.

The government leads 46 to 34 percent on the primary vote.

But it appears federal politics is hitting state opinions and could drive down the NSW's coalition's majority.

Eight percent of those who voted for the coalition at the 2011 state election say they have changed their vote because of Tony Abbott's government's performance.

Based on the poll, the Baird government would maintain power after the March 28 election but would face a swing against it of 8.2 percent.

Mr Baird's predecessor Barry O'Farrell romped home to a comfortable win four years ago, mainly off the back of a string of Labor gaffes.

Mr Baird leads Labor leader Luke Foley as preferred premier by 54 percent to 24 percent with 22 percent uncommitted.
