A Current Affair viewers have rallied behind a 90-year-old great-grandmother who had her money and a spiral staircase taken from her home by a rogue tradie.

Shortly after saying goodbye to her husband of 27 years, Bernice Miller got stung by her painter, who never returned to finish the job.

"If there's a fire, it would be goodnight," Bernice, who used the stairs as an emergency exit from her Sydney home, said.

Bernice turned to A Current Affair after painter Leon Leonidas Tsounakis refused to pay a court order in her favour.

"I'm not Leon," Tsounakis told A Current Affair after he was confronted at a service station.

While Bernice could use the inside stairs without the second set outside, there was no way off the top floor in an emergency.

After seeing the story, Final Touch Building stepped in to replace the stairs.

The surprise knock on the door reduced Bernice to tears.

"I don't know what to say, you're amazing - thank you," Bernice said while hugging the workers.

Final Touch Building had the stairs ready in the same week as Bernice's 91st birthday.

"She is safe and happy now and that's what matters to us," Pierre Lykourezos from Final Touch Building said.

In another win, Bernice said she was pleased Tsounakis had started paying her back.
