Could Adelaide be the next sporting capital of Australia?

South Australia claims it's the country's latest sporting capital as the AFL prepares for the Gather Round in Adelaide, which kicks off tonight.

Across the entire fifth round, nine games will take place in the state in a four-day footy festival.

Locals in Mount Barker, which is nestled in the Adelaide Hills with a population of around 21,000, are going all out to transform their modest oval into a fully fledged AFL venue for the Saturday game between North Melbourne and the Brisbane Lions.

Adelaide's AFL takeover isn't the only sporting event to take place in the state in 2023.

Next week, Greg Norman will take his LIV golfing tour to Adelaide, which is financially backed by Saudi Arabia.

The NRL is also on South Australia's radar, with the competition to host Game 1 of this year's State of Origin series.

There's even talks of the city getting its own team.

However, this week is all about the AFL and as fans arrive in their droves, businesses are ready to cash in.
