Police urge Melbourne protesters to reconsider rallies in wake of deadly shooting

Victoria Police is urging protesters to reconsider taking to the streets of Melbourne in two separate planned marches this weekend, as the force grapples with an unprecedented manhunt in the state's northeast.

Police have vowed not to rest until accused gunman Dezi Freeman is found, with 450 police officers from across the country now involved in the manhunt after two officers were killed on Tuesday.

As the unprecedented police operation takes up significant resources, police insist they have ample resources to have a presence at concurrent marches planned in Melbourne's CBD this weekend.

A Pro-Palestine protest and an anti-mass immigration march are both set to take hold of the city this Sunday, bringing concerns activists could clash.

A Current Affair spoke to Victoria Police Superintendent Troy Papworth, who is urging protesters to reconsider the events for another date.

"We would ask people to really consider whether this weekend is the appropriate weekend to come out and protest in Melbourne, given what we've been through as a police force and also the community in Porepunkah what they're going through at the moment," Papworth said.

"But if it is, we would ask you to come out and protest peacefully and work with police and make sure that all these opposing groups stay away from each other."
