Platinum Jubilee: What to expect this weekend

Over the next few days, celebrations will mark the record-breaking reign of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

The queen has spent 70 years on the throne and the first ever Platinum Jubilee is set to commemorate her decades of duty and service.

In anticipation for the momentous occasion, never seen before footage has been released from the queen's personal collection, for a documentary she narrates.

"I always enjoyed capturing family moments," the queen can be heard saying in the documentary.

"You always hope that future generations will find them interesting and perhaps be surprised that you too, were young once."

To allow everyone to enjoy the Platinum Jubilee the next four days are holidays in the United Kingdom.

Celebrations begin Thursday, London-time, with the traditional Trooping the Colour parade.

On Friday, there's a special service of Thanksgiving at St Paul's Cathedral, while on Saturday there's an epic Party at the Palace concert.

The concert will feature Queen with Adam Lambert, Diana Ross, Duran Duran, David Beckham, Julie Andrews and Sir David Attenborough.

On Sunday is the grand finale - the Jubilee Pageant - which promises to use the latest technology to "bring to life iconic moments from the queen's reign".

"I think Elizabeth is that rare leader who has maintained her position through a constant commitment, a sense of duty and stability that really, marks her out against any other world leader," University of Sydney Royal Historian, Dr Cindy McCreery said.

McCreery explained that Australians can also take part in the Jubilee.

"There are going to be services of Thanksgiving at Anglican Cathedrals in Sydney and Brisbane," McCreery said.

"There's going to be choral concerts all around Australia.

"There's going to be morning teas in places like Bundaberg and Orange.

"And in Victoria, the Australian Racing Museum is putting online a special collection of highlights, which indicate the links between the queen and horse racing in Australia."
