A young Melbourne woman who was bullied for years for the sound of her voice is now a social media star.

Charlotte MacGregor, 22, has amassed a huge following on TikTok of more than 150,000 followers for her "manly" voice and she told A Current Affair she's now having the last laugh.

"People are now like, 'you're an inspiration', and I never thought of myself like that," she said.

"It makes me feel like this is for a reason and I'm meant to share my story."

Ms MacGregor said she had a high-pitched voice as a child.

When she turned 12, she started noticing changes in her voice but it wasn't until she was 15 when she knew something wasn't quite right.

"I remember a couple of kids came up to me in school and said to me, 'you sound like a male', or would question my gender - 'are you female, are you male?' and I started thinking, 'ok this isn't normal,'" she said.

There were times where Ms MacGregor was bullied so much, she thought she wouldn't make it through high school.

"I had suicidal thoughts. It was really bad … there were moments where I thought, 'I can't get out of this,'" Ms MacGregor said.

But now Ms MacGregor has fully embraced her sound.

"He made me believe that my voice is like this for a reason and that he loves me no matter what I sound like, or look like, or anything of that nature," she said.

Melbourne voice therapist Rebecca Lewis Fox said although it may sound like Ms MacGregor has a deep voice, it's actually quite normal - Ms MacGregor's voice just resonates differently.

"I see lots of people who say they don't like the sound of their voice," she said.

"I think the combination of the resonance and therefore the pitch of where her voice sits naturally leads it to sound darker and lower than what it actually is."

Ms Fox said Ms MacGregor's voice is the same tone as actor Kathleen Turner of Jessica Rabbit fame.

Even today, Ms MacGregor is subject to bullying and abuse on her TikTok videos but now doesn't let that bother her.

She has a message to the bullies.

"Look where I am now. I'm going through life, thriving, and doing the best that I can, and I don't know if I can say the same for those people to be honest," she said.
