Melbourne protesters plan to put 'bodies on the line' for anti-war cause

Organisers of a major anti-war protest set to take hold of Melbourne's CBD tomorrow claim they are willing to be arrested and plan to put their "bodies on the line" for the demonstration.

Authorities will be on high alert tomorrow when a 25,000-person strong protest threatens to infiltrate the city.

Anti-war protesters intend to form a human ring around the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre in a bid to shut down the Land Forces Defence Expo being held inside.

It could be Melbourne's biggest protest since the World Economic Forum back in 2000.

Organisers Jasmine Duff and Bella Beiraghi said protesters were willing to be arrested "if that's what it comes down to".

"Labor has decided to put money, instead of health and education, to put money into bringing tanks and other weapons right in the heart of Melbourne so companies can advertise those weapons and sell more of them," Duff said.

Duff said the protester's aim was to prevent politicians and weapons company executives from attending the expo.

"While we're non-violent, we're going to be putting our bodies on the line, we are going to be getting in the way," Duff said.

"We want to prevent those people getting in there and having their lavish breakfast. 

"There's going to be thousands of people all across Melbourne taking action right throughout the week to disrupt this convention."

A reported 1800 police will be brought in for the three-day expo - costing taxpayers at least $10 million.

A giant fence has been erected around the conference and hotels hosting delegates are under guard after recent vandalism.
