Rain didn't ruin the Melbourne Cup or the party that surrounded it as thousands packed into a wet and wild Flemington with their umbrellas and ponchos to celebrate.

After two years of reduced numbers due to COVID-19, everyone was happy to be back, despite the wet, wild and woefully cold weather.

"It's been awesome, the atmosphere's been great, (there's) a lot of people. If the sun was out it'd be awesome – more awesome, I should say," one punter told A Current Affair.

Some racegoers told A Current Affair reporter Martin King they'd even come from as far as the UK for the event.
