A group of furious western Sydney residents who have lived with a growing sinkhole for 18 months fear a second potential pothole is opening up in the suburb.

The new pothole is right near Leonay's exit to the highway, with locals fearing if it grows bigger, it'll leave them with only one way in and out.

It was covered over by Penrith City Council workers last week, but locals say that's exactly how the other sinkhole started.

"I came past this the morning as soon as it happened and I just saw a girl out there painting the paint on the road," local Ellen said.

"And when I came back the road was closed and there was a huge hole in the road. It was amazing."

They petitioned council to reimburse them for the extra kilometres they've had to travel since the road's been closed, but that request was refused.

Back then, the council insisted the road would be fixed by February, but halfway into March the sinkhole remains.

Work is continuing on the site to rectify the sinkhole.

Due to the significant nature of the works underway, Sydney Water representatives are continuously monitoring the works and are currently investigating the condition of one of its existing assets in the work area.

This is limiting work on the central sewer encasement at the site, however Council's contractor is continuing work across the remainder of the site.

At this stage it is unknown whether this will affect the overall timeframe of the project.

A road plate has been installed over the small hole in the road on Leonay Parade.

Investigations have identified the cause to be a private water line and is unrelated to the sinkhole issue on River Road.
